Many of you may have heard that Costa Rica (home to Lazy Bride) had an earthquake last Thursday, January 8. Registering 6.2 on the Richter scale at 1:21 PM, it caused a great deal of damage and, at this writing, 18 deaths and dozens of people are still missing. The epicentre was at the Poas Volcano in the Central Valley, just outside of the capital of San Jose. Luckily, this is a sparsely populated, agricultural area. Unfortunately, it is all mountains, valleys and hills, dotted with humble villages of homes out of concrete block and tin roofs. Four villages were literally wiped off the map last week, buried by massive landslides. As you can see by the photo above, it was devastating. The country has officially called a five-day state of mourning and has suspended the opening of the various fairs around the country out of respect to the earthquake victims.
Sadly, it is an area with many poorer families, most without insurance. These people have lost literally everything and are currently living in tents and relief centers. Many Lazy Bride readers as well as my wedding clients have asked how they can help. Right now, the Red Cross is asking for cash donations so they can purchase building materials and food.
If you would like to help, in whatever way you can, Lazy Bride is taking cash donations via PayPal, which we will then forward to the Red Cross here in Costa Rica. Please make sure to note your mailing address so we can send you a thank you card.
Many thanks for your kind consideration and for lending a hand to those who need it most.
